This frigate, named La Cantabria, belonged to his Majesty Charles III’s naval courier. It covered the route from A Coruña to Buenos Aires, and ended its life on a journey back to Spain after leaving Montevideo. It happened at the Coenda shallows on the night of 20 February 1773. The story passed by word of mouth, with the elderly telling how the frigate captain, Cosme Brings, already dead, was found by a local, who said he had seen Mr Cosme emerging from the onshore waters with the rudder in his hands.
15 crew members died out of the 21.
