4 or 5 miles from Vilán and in the middle of a bad storm, the English steamship Diligent dropped anchor and was abandoned by its crew due a broken propeller shaft. Riding out the waves in the lifeboats, the crew had landed on Trece beach.
With the help of the tug Newa and faced with the difficulty of the bad weather, they managed to save it from a sinking that looked like a foregone conclusion.
They tried to shelter it from the bad weather in the port of A Coruña. The refusal of the captain of the Newa to listen to the practical suggestion of the port meant that the Diligent sank at the entrance to the port.
